Emergency First Aid at Work + Life-Threatening Bleeding

Course Overview

Emergency First Aid at Work with Life-Threatening Bleeding training gives learners the knowledge, skills & confidence to act quickly when someone is experiencing severe, uncontrolled bleeding. In these situations, minutes matter. Knowing how to respond can be the difference between life and death.

This training reflects current UK best practice, including updates from the Resuscitation Council UK 2025 Guidelines, which place greater emphasis on early recognition of catastrophic haemorrhage and the use of direct pressure, haemostatic dressings and tourniquets where appropriate.

It also supports employers in meeting their responsibilities under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, particularly where risk assessments identify a higher likelihood of serious injury.

This approach aligns with the HSE’s guidance set out in the Health and Safety Executive L74 Approved Code of Practice, which outlines how employers should assess and provide appropriate first aid arrangements based on workplace risk.

In workplaces, incidents involving machinery, tools, vehicles or sharp materials can result in catastrophic bleeding. Without prompt and effective intervention, a casualty can deteriorate very quickly.

Who the Course Is For

This course is right for any organisation where staff may encounter a medical emergency or a serious bleeding incident, which includes far more workplaces than most employers realise. It is particularly valuable for:

  • Construction, manufacturing, engineering, and warehousing environments where machinery and tool injuries carry a serious haemorrhage risk
  • Security teams, door staff, and event personnel working in public-facing high-risk settings
  • Schools, colleges, and education providers with duty of care responsibilities for large numbers of people
  • Healthcare and social care staff who may encounter serious injury or trauma
  • Offices, retail, hospitality, and professional services, where workplace or public incidents can occur without warning
  • Remote, lone, and mobile workers who may be first on scene without immediate backup
  • Anyone appointed as a workplace first aider or emergency responder whose role requires them to act when something serious happens

No previous first aid experience is required.

Why This Training Is Important

Severe bleeding can occur following workplace accidents, machinery injuries, falls, road traffic incidents, or violent events. Without rapid intervention, catastrophic blood loss can quickly lead to shock, organ failure, and death.

The Health and Safety Executive highlights the importance of appropriate first aid arrangements under the First Aid Regulations. Life-threatening bleeding training strengthens workplace preparedness by ensuring staff can respond decisively to serious incidents while emergency services are on their way.

This course enhances standard Emergency First Aid at Work provision by focusing specifically on haemorrhage control and current best practice.

What this course also addresses is the reality of where serious bleeding incidents happen. Not always in a workplace with a stocked first aid kit nearby. Sometimes in a car park, a street, a public event, or a remote site. The person who responds may have nothing to hand except their own clothing and their training. This course prepares learners for that scenario specifically, because the most important bleeding control tool is knowledge of what to do, not the equipment you happen to have with you.

What You Will Learn

This course covers everything included in the Emergency First Aid at Work qualification and extends it to include specialist training in life-threatening bleeding control.

As a standard component of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider
  • Assess emergency situations safely and effectively
  • Manage an unresponsive casualty, including the recovery position
  • Perform adult CPR in line with current Resuscitation Council UK guidance
  • Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) confidently
  • Respond appropriately to choking, shock, and seizures
  • Provide first aid for burns and minor workplace injuries
  • Recognise and respond to anaphylaxis
  • Know when and how to call emergency services
  • Understand basic incident recording and reporting responsibilities

In addition to the above, this extended qualification also covers life-threatening bleeding, so learners will also be able to:

  • Understand what life-threatening bleeding is and why immediate action matters
  • Recognise the signs of catastrophic haemorrhage
  • Carry out a rapid casualty assessment in a bleeding emergency
  • Apply direct pressure effectively to control severe blood loss
  • Control bleeding using dressings and improvised materials
  • Understand when and how tourniquets may be used appropriately
  • Manage casualties safely until emergency services arrive
  • Appreciate the importance of early intervention and scene safety

  • Wound packing techniques
  • Safe and appropriate use of tourniquets
  • Infection prevention and personal safety during bleeding emergencies
  • Monitoring casualties and handing over to emergency services

The session includes demonstrations and practical scenarios across both elements to build confidence and competence.

The Practical Element: Why It Matters

This course is delivered face-to-face only. That is not a preference. It is a requirement.

The HSE is clear that practical first aid competencies must be physically assessed. And for life-threatening bleeding control specifically, the difference between knowing a technique and being able to apply it under pressure is built through practice, not through watching a video.

Learners use real tourniquets and haemostatic dressings. They work through simulated wound packing. They practice direct pressure with the correct technique and the right amount of force. And they work through scenarios where no equipment is available, so they understand how to improvise and, critically, that improvisation can be highly effective when the person doing it has been trained.

Sessions are delivered at your workplace or chosen venue, with scenarios tailored to your environment and the risks your team is most likely to face.

How the Course Is Delivered

Sessions are practical, high-engagement, and built around realistic scenarios. The aim is not just to teach technique but to build the confidence to act under pressure, when something serious is happening, and someone needs help immediately.

Delivery includes:

  • Time for questions, because this course consistently generates them
  • Hands-on practice with tourniquets and haemostatic dressings
  • Simulated wound packing scenarios
  • Improvised bleeding control exercises using non-specialist materials
  • Practical CPR and AED training with training equipment
  • Scenario-based learning covering life-threatening bleeding, cardiac arrest, choking, and other serious emergencies
  • Individual assessment of practical competencies throughout the day

FAQs

What is life-threatening bleeding?

Life-threatening bleeding, sometimes referred to as catastrophic haemorrhage, is severe blood loss that cannot be controlled quickly and can lead to shock or death within minutes if not treated. It may present as heavy, continuous bleeding, blood pooling on the floor, clothing becoming rapidly soaked, or bleeding from a major wound or traumatic injury. Recognising these signs early is critical, as immediate intervention significantly improves the chances of survival.

Is this level of training included in standard first aid courses?

Basic bleeding control is included in standard first aid courses such as Emergency First Aid at Work. However, this course goes further by focusing specifically on the recognition and management of life-threatening bleeding. It introduces techniques and considerations that are particularly relevant in higher-risk environments, including the use of tourniquets and haemostatic dressings, and reinforces the need for rapid, decisive action.

Do employers need to provide this type of training?

The Health and Safety Executive L74 Approved Code of Practice makes it clear that first aid provision should be based on the specific risks present in the workplace. Where there is a risk of serious injury or trauma, employers should consider enhanced training. This course directly supports that approach by focusing on high-risk scenarios and appropriate responses.

Is this course suitable for low-risk workplaces?

Yes. While particularly relevant for higher-risk environments, the skills taught are valuable in any workplace. Serious incidents can occur unexpectedly, and having staff who can recognise and respond to life-threatening bleeding can make a significant difference in any setting.

Can this training be tailored to our workplace?

Yes. The course can be adapted to reflect your specific workplace risks, environment and equipment. This may include focusing on particular hazards, incorporating your risk assessments, or using scenarios that reflect real incidents your team may face.
